David Mella, 18 years old and rising star of Deportivo La Coruña.
A youngster from Santiago de Compostela has reawakened the illusion in Deportivo de La Coruña, the club that currently plays in the 1st Spanish Federation aspires to return to LaLiga Hypermotion (Spanish second division), something that looked very far away at the beginning of the season. In the first round of the competition, in 19 games they only managed seven wins, a fact that left them quite far from their main objective which is direct promotion.
The club began to trust in the young promises that were shining in the reserve team, among them an 18 year old left winger, short in stature, very fast and of great quality. David Mella came from a great season in the reserve team of A Coruña and that has allowed him to start this season in the first team, although in the first round most of the matches he started from the bench and did not have a lot of minutes by the coach, whenever he entered the field he revolutionised the matches.
In the two Cup matches that Dépor played this season, Mella played as a starter and in both games he managed to score a goal. On the 21st of January, the second round of the competition started and there was a revolution in the starting eleven of the Dépor team. Mella and the youngsters from the youth academy started the match against the leader, Ponferradina, the team from the province of León was at the top of the table and with a big difference with respect to their competitors. But this match brought a change, Deportivo won 2-0 and since then, they have played six more league matches and have won all of them.
Since Idiakez (Deportivo's coach) trusted Mella as a starter in the league the club is dreaming of direct promotion. They are currently in second place, just one point behind leaders Ponferradina, but the good dynamic of the last few games has awakened the illusion again in Riazor. The fans, who have never left the team despite the situation, believe more than ever in the possibility of direct promotion and taking Deportivo back to where they deserve to be.
David Mella's great performances have led him to be called up to the Spanish U-19 national team and to make his debut with them on 17 January against the Italian U-19 team. In addition to this, Mella has attracted interest from some of Spain's top clubs.
